Infrastructure and Reliability Recruitment
Infrastructure and reliability engineering keeps a trading firm’s systems running when it matters most. It’s also one of the most misunderstood hiring categories in this space, frequently confused with standard cloud infrastructure or DevOps roles, when the actual work sits considerably deeper.
How is infrastructure and reliability work at a trading firm different from standard cloud DevOps?
Substantially deeper and closer to the actual trading systems. Many of these roles sit closer to what’s often called production engineering, a genuine mix of real software engineering and system reliability work, rather than the cloud-provisioning and infrastructure-as-code focus typical of a standard SRE role elsewhere. Engineers in these roles routinely work at the Linux operating system and kernel level specifically to eliminate latency issues, tuning scheduler behaviour and managing resource contention under real production load.
What makes this genuinely front-office adjacent rather than a purely backend function?
Direct exposure to live trading impact. Engineers in these roles support live trading systems, researchers, and portfolio managers directly, and when something breaks, the consequence is immediate and financially visible, not an abstract SLA breach. That proximity to real business outcomes is part of what makes this work genuinely different from infrastructure roles at most technology companies.
What technical background actually predicts success here?
Strong computer science fundamentals combined with genuine comfort operating at the systems and kernel level. Data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems knowledge matter, but so does a genuine interest in the kind of deep, unglamorous systems work, chasing down a latency spike, tuning kernel parameters, that doesn’t always show up clearly on a CV.
Does a candidate need prior trading experience for an infrastructure and reliability role?
No. What matters is genuine depth in systems and reliability engineering, prior exposure to financial markets is typically taught on the job. Strong candidates for these roles often come from technology companies or infrastructure-heavy engineering backgrounds without any prior finance exposure at all.
How does Reload assess candidates for infrastructure and reliability roles specifically?
Against genuine depth at the systems level, not surface-level cloud or DevOps experience. We look for real evidence of working at the OS and kernel layer, genuine production incident experience, and comfort taking ownership when something breaks under pressure, rather than experience limited to standard cloud infrastructure tooling.
What should a firm expect from Reload on an infrastructure and reliability search?
A search built around the real depth this work requires, not a generic DevOps or SRE candidate pool. We understand the distinction between standard cloud infrastructure roles and the genuinely deeper, more front-office adjacent nature of this work at a trading firm, and we source and assess against that reality specifically.
